The battle at Dettingen in Germany where George II led his troops into battle (the last English monarch to do so) has connections with Alveston.

In the old church there is a plaque commemorating Colonel Newsham Peers who died in this battle. He lived in Alveston House.

In 1744 Alveston was lauded as a health spa! Dr Charles Parry comments on “the salubrity of the air”. On Alveston Hill there was a spring and a pool where the sick bathed in hope of a cure. This site is on the corner of the “asparagus field” where there are two houses and a water station.
